Our Resources- Power and Industry (RPI) team have a new opportunity for a
Senior Engineer to join the Energy team. Based in Melbourne- you will
primarily focus on developing and delivering grid connection services projects
to be undertaken by the team and support the broader Power & Industrial
business.
This is an exciting time for AECOM`s RPI business as the energy market and
Renewable Energy in particular continues to grow resulting in grid connection
becoming a critical area where proponents (utility providers and privat

investors and developers) are seeking specialized grid connection and networ

planning services and AECOM has been securing utility scale projects.

The role of Senior/Principal Power Systems and Network Planning engineer
requires a thorough understanding of all aspects of transmission and
distribution planning for both regulated and industrial networks. The role
requires hands on capabilities with respect to commonly used power system
analysis tools with a particular focus on PSS/E and PSCAD. PowerFactory and
ETAP expertise is desirable. A practical understanding of the regulatory-
economic- and social aspects of power system planning will complement this
detailed technical understanding.

As part of this role you will:

Undertake Grid Connection due diligence including desk top and system studies

Support clients in negotiating with regulator and market operator (AEMO) and Network Service Providers the best grid connection outcomes for their projects

Support negotiation of Connection Agreements including Technical Schedules

Deliver concept design services and grid connection advice to clients

Develops reports for new connection generators

Project manage medium to large scale projects

Proactively identify opportunities for business process(es) improvement

Participate in business development such as drafting proposal- expression of interest- cost/fee estimates etc.

Liaises with OEMs and clients for technical/commercial issues.

Technical Requirements and Knowledge

Technical due diligence on project development connection options and analyze network capacity and constraint assessment (including both desk top and power system studies)

Technical review of grid connection capability of various renewable technology such as Wind Turbines- PV & Battery Inverters- Pumped Hydro etc.

Development of connection concept SLDs to feed into the feasibility and detailed studies

Detailed technical studies using PSS/e and PSCAD software platforms to assess compliance against the relevant technical requirements of the National Electricity Rules for generation projects including completion of Static and Dynamic power system studies for the project

Develop voltage and Reactive control design philosophy for the generating facility for different connection configurations and connection voltages including varying system strength of the connecting network

Review of generating system vendor model documentation (such as design and system data sheets- RUG etc.)

Support proponents in negotiating the Generator Performance Standards (GPS)- and associated connection agreements and deeds etc.

Review and assessment of AEMO & Network Service Provider`s technical requirements of Connection Assets such as primary- protection- control- and monitoring requirements

Negotiate the scope of interface works required to connect the generating facility

Be able to manage- the generation registration process.

Perform Transient Analysis using EMT model in PSCAD as required by AMEO and NSPs

Grid Connection Execution for various projects in solar- wind- and battery storage systems

Tender Management for Various Power system projects.

Minimum Requirements

5 + relevant professional experience working for an Engineering Design Consultancy or an OEM vendor or Utility Network Planning and connections

Successful track record in field of expertise and substantial project experience

Eligible for Chartered Engineer status with Engineers Australia

Basic understanding of transmission and distribution planning for both regulated and industrial networks including transmission and distribution connection process and associated guidelines and requirements for connecting new generators and loads

Basic understanding of balance of plant design for different renewable technologies such as wind- solar- Battery- Pumped Hydro

Demonstrated understanding of compliance assessment of NER s5.2- 5.3- ESCOSA & OTR technical requirements including Connection Application checklist

Demonstrated technical DD on grid connection for greenfield and brown field projects

Undertaken or reviewed detailed grid connection studies using PSS/e and PSCAD

Set up and maintained subscription of PSS/E- Power Factory and PSCAD software licenses

Demonstrated understanding of negotiations with AEMO and NSPs

Demonstrated understanding of Generator and Load registration process

Design Managed Renewables connection projects at Transmission or distribution level

Demonstrated understanding of control and protection principles of high voltage substation equipment- transmission lines- generators- transformers- reactive equipment- etc.

Proficient in PSS/E – PSCAD and Digsilent PowerFactory-

Working knowledge of python scripting for both PSSE and PSCAD.

Demonstrated experience in preparing technical design documentation
